Information On Crete - Lasithi

Lasithi is eastmost prefecture of Crete. The largest and most famous of its towns are Agios Nikolaos (the capital), Sitia and Ierapetra, with Ierapetra being on the south coast of Lasithi.

Lasithi has a lot of places to see and some amazing beaches to swim in. The distances on Crete are huge, but by driving you can get to other places on the island. It is a good idea to stay many days, in order to see as much of Crete as you can, although it is impossible to manage to see all of it.

The trademark of Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, is Voulismeni Lake located right in the center of town. This is where most people gather to enjoy a drink along with the great scenery. There are some interesting museums (an archaeological museum and a folklore museum) around the town as well as some nice beaches in walking distance. On the north side of the town lies the Cretan Olive Oil Farm.

Crete on the whole is an island where you can find whatever you are looking for. There are quiet areas for accommodation and deserted beaches for those who want a peaceful vacation, while there are also cosmopolitan beaches with bustling tourist resorts for intense holidays.

Food & Drink On Crete - Lasithi

In Lasithi you should try the cooked snails, skioufikta (local pasta), various kinds of pies, stuffed vine-leaves, local lamb or goat, local rabbit and - if you can find it - gamopilafo (traditional rice served in weddings). Of course you will find plenty of fresh fish, seafood and kakavia (fish soup). From salads try the famous Cretan dakos and stamnagathi, extremely bitter greens which only grow on Crete. Accompany your meal with Cretan graviera cheese, myzithra cheese, local wine and raki. It is generally advised eating in mountainous villages and avoiding the heavily touristic taverns.
